"(...) The higher pixel density of the new iPhone 4 makes quite a nice scanner, I’ve found. If your source is crisply-printed and on a white background, and your lighting is good, the OCR in Prizmo is surprisingly accurate. (...)

To me, it is simply incredible to have an OCR application on the iPhone. That this OCR is accompanied by several other helpful functions within the Prizmo app is just amazing, when one considers that desktop OCR apps usually cost over a hundred dollars. Prizmo has put in my pocket what just a couple years ago required a desktop scanner and expensive software. Never has scanning and manipulating text been so accessible. I highly recommend Prizmo if these features could be useful to you."

(...) After you take an image or import it from your camera roll, you can crop and enhance the image to assure a good capture. You can also rotate the image, because the OCR software wants to see the text oriented correctly. There is also an option to white balance the image before the OCR step.

Does it work? Yes, and quite well. For most OCR tasks, the accuracy is very high. Like most OCR apps, you may have to fix a letter or some errant mistake, but my results were very good. You have to have a good image to start with, well lit and in focus. The iPhone camera will take care of the focus, and the app provides super-imposed grid lines to help you hold the camera straight. There are other programs that do OCR, other programs that do text to speech, and others still that will do translations. This is the first program that integrates these functions into a solid app. (...)

"(...) Comme toutes les applications d'OCR, Prizmo ne peut prétendre au 100% de reconnaissance. Il faudra parfois s'y reprendre à deux fois pour obtenir le résultat souhaité et il très probable que des cartes un peu trop graphiques poseront problème. Mais le logiciel peut aussi très bien se débrouiller. Un peu de pratique et d'habitude devraient réduire les mauvaises surprises. L'interface ensuite est extrêmement bien réalisée, assez ludique et avec une intégration Dropbox bienvenue."
